Hat Fit Guide
How Should A Hat Feel?
One of the most common questions we receive is surprisingly simple:
"How should a hat actually fit?"
The answer is that a well-made hat should feel secure, balanced and comfortable without drawing attention to itself.
A hat that is too tight can create pressure around the forehead and become uncomfortable during extended wear. A hat that is too loose may move excessively or feel unstable, particularly in windy conditions.
The ideal fit sits comfortably around the head with gentle contact rather than pressure. You should be able to wear it for hours without constantly adjusting it.
The Difference Between Fit And Comfort
Many people assume fit and comfort are the same thing.
Workshops know they are not.
A hat can technically fit while still feeling uncomfortable if the proportions, materials or construction are poorly considered. Equally, a beautifully designed hat can feel exceptionally comfortable because the fit has been carefully balanced with the overall design.
The methods informing the Mister Miller workshop draw upon decades of British hatmaking expertise, where comfort has always been considered one of the highest forms of craftsmanship.
Different Styles Fit Differently
A slim-cut Newsboy naturally feels different from a fuller Bakerboy.
A Panama behaves differently from a wool cap.
A structured sailor cap feels different from a relaxed summer linen style.
These differences are entirely normal and form part of the character of each design.
