ABOUT MISTER MILLER

The Craft, with Character

It all started with a bobbin.

Miller was twelve, perched beside his father at home while a vintage Singer sewing machine rattled through a pile of blouses, skirts, and, yes, ski pants (it was the '80s, let’s not judge). That was the spark. Two years later, a work experience placement turned into a full-blown hat habit that never quite wore off.

The first hat? A yellow cycling cap for Michelin Tyres, stitched from some truly questionable '70s fabric for a Tour de France promotion. Not exactly couture, but every master starts somewhere. The stitches may have been crooked, but the obsession was perfectly aligned.

It wasn’t long before Miller found himself in the beating heart of British hatting: Luton. A town so steeped in millinery history that, in 1571, Parliament passed a law forcing every male over the age of six to wear a wool cap on Sundays. (Break the law, pay a fine. Stay stylish, save the wool trade.) That law may have fizzled out, but the culture stuck, flat caps, factories, and no-nonsense craftsmanship.

From 1988 through 2019, Miller honed his skills at Olney’s Headwear, one of the most respected names in the game since 1915. He rose through the ranks, worked alongside top designers, and eventually became an integral part of the in-house team. A particular highlight? Collaborating with the legendary Misa Harada, whose sculptural, rebellious designs were worn by everyone from Mugler’s muses to Yohji Yamamoto’s runways and even exhibited at the V&A.

As word spread, bespoke commissions started to roll in. The Peaky Blinders Festival came calling. So did a growing crowd of discerning clients after hats with presence, pieces with soul and swagger. So, Miller stepped out on his own and founded his namesake label: Mister Miller.

Today, every hat is still handmade in Britain using the finest fabrics known to mankind (and millinery): luxurious wools, Harris tweeds, cashmeres in the cooler months; washed linens, crisp cottons, and selvedge denim for warmer climes. A hat for every head, and every season.

Designs are grounded in tradition but never stuck in the past. Expect aged leathers, unexpected colour pops, tonal contrasts, and linings that tell a story. Branding is kept discreet - after all the spotlight should be on you.

Mister Miller hats are made for men, women, and anyone with good taste and a head worth dressing. On occasion, we’ve even crafted family sets complete with monograms... and yes, once, a custom cap for a very cherished teddy bear.

Because style starts at the top, and so should the storytelling.
